I live in an older home with an old lead pipe as the water supply line. Tree roots have pulled this line out of the ground exposing it to the weather and caused strain on the line. I have dug a trench around the it to bypass the tree but am stuck on the best way to convert lead pipe to PVC for the bypass. Best current idea I have is to use some sort of clamp fitting with an abundance of silicone. I am also considering connecting metal pipe to it via the existing threads (though this would require much more digging [pipes sections are 20' long] and I don't have a lot of confidence in the current threads of the pipe as it is old). Another idea would be to cut the pipe and cut new threads.

Any advice or thoughts? Thanks so much!

1. Lead pipes do not have threads
2. Lead pipes are ONE CONTINUOUS piece, not 20' sections.
3. You may have to rethink what you are doing once you find out what kind of pipe you do have.

Thanks for your expertise...it is appreciated. The pipe is 3/4" length and in about 20' long sections and rusty. Any idea on what it could be?

Galvanized steel. IF the outside is rusty, the inside will be even more so. The best solution is the replace the entire line.
