Recently bought a house, it has old 60 year old cast iron main/ lateral. The rest of it was changed to pvc already but the rest is original and I assume the sewer to the street as well.
I have no idea of the plumbing history of the house. What should I do to insure the drain system is functioning properly?
Someone suggested yearly snaking from a plumber, should I be jumping right into that regime or should I wait to see if a problem arises?
What do you suggest I do in regards to the drain system?

"Yearly preventive maintenance" on a sewer line can CAUSE problems, not cure them. I advise to do nothing until a cleaning is required. Then clear it and wait until it happens again. If it recurs within a year, then repair or replacement is indicated, otherwise just clear it when necessary.

Thanks.
I will certainly heed your advice and wait. When a rodding is necessary I will request a plumber that can snake it and inspect it with a camera. Hopefully the request for a camera doesn't invite the vultures if you know what I mean.
Besides a total blockage, what other signs indicate a need for rodding?

with a camera inspection you should get a DVD copy of what it saw. so no vulture can tell you something is wrong if it isn't. actually, they can tell you something is wrong if it isn't wrong but any knowledgable plumber can either verify or debunk.
as for symptoms of a problem, a gurgling drain usually means partial stoppage.
