Warm Water in Laundry Tub and two Bath Tubs...Hot Water everywhere else?
Author: B.J. (Non-US)

Hello,

I've noticed my laundry room tub and two bath tubs only have warm water, but there is hot water everywhere else in the house. At first when these faucets are turn on they feel hot, but then they change to warm. The hot water pipe leaving the hot water tank feels hot. This pipe then goes into a mixing valve about 8 inches above. It does make sense that it would be the mixing valve if the rest of the house has hot water....or does it?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

A have a question and a statement:
1. What is the proximity of the heater to these fixtures?
2. Be aware that shower valves and some laundry tub faucets allow cross flow of hot and cold water.

The laundry tub is in the basement, right beside the tank. Two tubs are located on the second level. One other note, one of the tubs have single handle moen faucet.

Thanks.

valve OFF the HW to the washer for awhile

if the problem is solved you have found the 'cross-over'

Turn off the HW valve to the laundry tub? It uses the same line as the laundry tub. I have a shut off there.

Thanks.

NO

turn off or disconnect the HW supply to the clothes washing machine - they have internal solenoid valves which sometimes 'may' cause a cross connection between hot and cold

Thanks, will do.

Does the laundry machine have to run during this duration?

yes - do a cold water wash and see if you now have HW nearby

then open the HW to the machine and do a 'warm' wash and see if the problem returns

Thanks again for the great advice.

It will be a few days though before I will need the washer again.

For now, I will see if things change in the next few days.

OK. I did a quick 5 minute run on cold, warm and hot. And still no changes.

Could the dishwaher be another one? Shut off the cold valve for that?

Other than that, replace the mixer or moen cartridge/s.....

It is initially hot at first, then as I ask for more water, it gets cooler

the dishwasher has no cold supply, only hot..

you are missing the point

the washing machine may have a crossover INTERNALLY

shut down the HW supply to the machine AT THE HOSE

see if the problem disappears

if it is gone you can CONFIRM it was the machine by opening the HW supply valve and trying different cycles to see if the problem comes back

OR

hire in a pro

If you get the hot supply to any fixture hot, it should remain warm for quite a while. If when you run one of the poor performing fixtures, it cools down rapidly, that is the culprit. Does that make sense? I have heard of plumbers finding cross-connections in apartment buildings this way.

Thanks for everyone's input again. I'll do some full cold runs this weekend and see if it clears up the problem. With HW off of course.

If this doesn't work, I'll be looking at cartridges.

When I use the bathroom sink when it's hot then I turn on the tub, the sinks temperature drops.

I'm afraid you've encountered a problem that only a professional will be able to resolve. He/She will be able to find the problem and not have to guess which fixture is causing the problem.

After trying some suggested tricks above. All sinks now seem to have only warm water.

Could it be the moen faucets?

The mixer brings it up a bit.

Well, I got my problem fixed.

In the end, it ended up being the mixing valve.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.
