every time I turn the water off to the house to work on plumbing, when I turn it back on the hot water faucets are plugged up with rust. what could I do to help this problem? would it help to open the lowest faucet in the basement when I first turn the water back on? it plugs the areators, but sometimes plugs up the valve too. thanks

Run water thru the tub spout first.

Debris is either from them water supplier, water heater or pipes.

open drain on water heat and see if lots of dirt comes out, if no flow, use a wire to clear path. look at what comes out - if lots of dirt - replace the heater.

Turn the hot water temp down to 120 F or less.

Pipes are probably galv. steel and are occluded/corroded - pressure usually drops; sometimes bits of corrosion plugs up aerators with yuk.

Other possibility is that debris is coming from water supply if so, add an 80 messh stainless steel screen in a wye strainer near the water inlet. Add a 1/2" ball valve to the bottom of the screen so to blown down the wye strainer- one time per month.

Normally if its just hot water side - its corrosion. high temp. water accelerates the process.

At some point - replace the pipes! until then, reduce hot water temp, also make sure that galv. pipes are not white where exposed to view pipes - if it is, then the pipes are warn out and pin hole leaks will follow shortly - replace ASAP.

Short term Solution: Turn off hot water heater, take your baths/showers using up the hot water, then pull all of the aerators and turn all fixtures onto full HOT water flow - this may help to clean your pipes. let run for 10 to 15 minutes.
