 Sprinkler line riser nipples
Author: sum (FL)

I have always used the gray colored SCH80 nipple for risers from the line outlet up to the pop up sprinklers.

Recently I had to repair a bunch of broken sprinkler heads and I realized one thing.

The SCH80 nipples are stronger than the SCH40 tee and pipe they screw into. If the heads are hit by a mower or driven over by a car or whatever the tees crack, and thus requiring a more complicated repair - dig deeper and wider, most likely need a slip fix.

There is another property where I used the real cheap nipples - I think these come in a dozen for like $2.99 or whatever.

These cheapos are actually BETTER, they have more "give", and won't crack the TEEs they thread into. It's better the nipples break then the TEEs break, right?

Am I thinking straight?

You can also get a "brown" version of those which will "flex" if they are hit so they do not even break.

Yes, in this case less is more. I would use them myself.
