 Strange gurgling in unused tub
Author: learningplumber (CA)

We have a bath tub in our Master Bath that we don't use. When we flush the toilet in the Guest Bath in the other end of the house, the tub in the Master Bath gurgles. We noticed the gurgle it seems b/c it's a big rush from the toilet. So I tested turning on each faucet, kitchen sink, showers and they too gurgle in that bathtub, but much softer given less rush of water. My question is -- Does the water in the unused bath tub drain trap dry up over the months it's not used so then I hear the gurgle? Or is the gurgle a sign of some leak? Or is it something I shouldn't worry about given the water, from what I can figure out, drains out to the end of the house near the Master bath tub and then out to the sewer? So it's just a natural drain sound. Maybe I should just run water in the unused bathtub occasionally to fill the trap and then I won't have the problem? Or do I have a real problem and I should call a plumber?

Just run some water into the tub to fill the trap. I'm sure the noise will go away until the next time the trap water evaporates.

Thank you Sharp1. It worked. I was afraid to do it before someone with knowledge told me to in that when I fix things they don't get fixed - they break and I need an expert. This is really a neat site. Thank you Sharp1 again and thank you plbg.com
