Author: NikkiK421 (CA)

Hi there,

What are the hazards of operating a gas dryer without a transition duct?

Hazards? Like carbon monoxide, moisture(mold/mildew) and lint(fire/allergies)? Where is the dryer located(inside the house? attached garage? detached structure?)?

Is this dryer not vented to the exterior or is it connected to the vent without a flexible connector?

Hi Steve,

The dryer is inside the apartment. There is a dryer vent on the exterior of the apartment.

We've had the gas company come to our place 4 times because we smelled gas when operating the dryer. A plumber came and replaced the gas valve. The gas company said that the duct work needed to be replaced/ vent re-directed. The plumber came back, put on some adapter and said the dryer could be used. We still smelled gas, the gas company came back and said that the transition duct was missing. They didn't detect gas, but said that operating the dryer without the transiton duct was hazardous.

The plumber is expected to return, but at this point I'm very skeptical of him fixing this and ensuring that the dryer is in safe operating condition.

Your thoughts?

Can you post pictures of how the dryer is currently vented?

I am not sure what you mean by "transition duct", but the venting is usually NOT a plumber's job. In any case you should NOT smell gas while the dryer is operating, and especially NOT when the dryer is off.

From that picture, all I see is the gas line, which is turned off.
