No Hot water in upstairs shower/bath
Author: jtracy (FL)

Our upstairs bath/shower - which we do not use except for guests, and was working fine a couple of months ago - is not getting any hot water.

All other hot water supplies in the house work. But in the upstairs bath & shower outlets, only the cold water supply is working.

It is a typical single control unit mounted on the tile wall just above the bath spigot. When it is turned on, cold water comes out. As the control is moved to the left, the pressure fades as the cold begins to cut off and the hot does not come on.

Has anybody seen this problem and habve a solution to offer?

I am guessing you have a Moen faucet in there. It sounds like you may need to have the cartridge replaced. It is most likely a Posi temp cartridge and the drum which controls the fluctuation of pressure is stuck.

Sometimes you can turn the handle from cold to hot repeatedly and free up the drum, but it does not always work.

That worked. Thank you!

Is the lack of continuous part of what caused this problem? And is replacing the cartridge an easy fix for a "weekend handyman", or should I engage a plumber if the problem reoccurs?

Yes, since the faucet was not used for a bit, the drum just stuck. You should run water in the tub at least once a month if not more anyways, to refresh the trap.

As far as the cartridge replacement, it is not a hard job, unless the cartridge gets stuck from corrosion or such. They do make a cartridge puller to help with the extraction of the old cartridge. You can contact Moen, and they may send you out a new cartridge. You can also just go to a local supply house or a hardware store (home depot, lowes) to buy a new cartridge..

Just be sure you turn the handle all the way to the hot side once a month not length of time just all the way hot and off. /posi temp\ moen..Most stuck 1222 carts can be tapped into self cleaning.
