When the Sanistand Was Discontinued ...
Author: ClassicBathFan82 (OR)

Hi,

Is it true that when American Standard had discontinued its women's urinal, the Sanistand, after about 20 years of production in 1970, that some of the few remaining, or "orphaned," units found homes in men's restrooms?

Two pictures confirm this. Both were taken at the Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. Going by the A-S logo seen on the urinals, they appear to be dated anywhere from 1964 to 1967.

American Standard, produced several different styles of their
"straddle urinal" Some were wall hung and another style was
floor mounted. I've seen them in the old factory washroom built
during WWII for the women who worked in the factories. Straddle
uninals were never desgined for female use... but made it useable.

The Manstone (F-5900 C) and the (F-5905 D) were produced in the
early 1940's and can be found on some government projects. The
Manstone successful design could have been the concept for the much
later producted Sanistand.

As always, I suggest that you continue on making contact with American
Standard's Library Historian in New York.

Best Wishes

You forgot the She-in-al by a female nurse in Florida, who designed
a floor standing urinal for women in the 90's, with a sanitary paper
funnel. In theory, it seemed practical, at the time but I'm sure is now part of the Plumbing Hall of Fame Products. You may still still observe one or two at a Pro Football Stadium in Florida.

Oh, those were the days.....

I rember that now.

More women were starting to attend sporting events and found at half-time the womens toilet rooms were overflowing with women because on average it takes them 3 times longer then a man even with the same number of plumbing fixtures in them.angry

The female urnial was suppose to help give us "Potty Parity" for the massesundecided

I made an opportunity to call a contact, known as the Historian, at American Stadard about the woman's standing urinal and its history. This person has probably forgotten more than I will ever know and I use him often for knowledge and verification.

The Manistone (F-5900 F-5905), was a floor mounted, standing urinal designed for men from 1940 to about 1957.

The Sanistand was designed in the late 1949 by then American Sanitary and produced from 1950 thru 1973, for woman.

The Kohler company also produced their version of the standing urinal for woman called the Hygiea which lasted for about the same amount of time.

In the early 1960 a company in Japan called ToTo designed and produced a standing urinal for woman, called the Sanistand and was feature at the World Olympics 1964, in Japan that year. It was discontinued shortly after that.

In the early 1990's a Reg Nurse by the name of Katie Jones, designed a floor mounted standing urinal, for women, called the Sheinal. Her company was called Urinette and based in Pensacola, Florida. Some believe that over 700 of these standing urinals were produced by a factory of 13 employees and sold to local business in the state of Florida and a new Pro Football Stadium, in Florida. Some say that some of the product was sold over seas to foreign countries, where the use of standing urinals for women was common. Urinette, was later sold to an investment group and ceased operations.

Hence, so goes standing urinals for women.

Au contraire, mon ami. American Standard DID try to create a female urinal with the Sanistand. They figured it would improve the "throughput" of the ladies' rest rooms if they did not have to use the toilet for all purposes, just as it works with a men's room.
