 Rusty tub overflow hole
Author: ArthurPeabody (NM)

I noticed rust on the tub on the right side of the overflow hole. I took off the cover and cleaned it and see that the inside edge of the hole is rusting and the rust is flowing past the edge of the cover. The overflow elbow
has migrated about 1/8" to the right. I'll clean off the rust and paint the edge, but I'd like to keep water off it. Is there a better solution than a layer of silicone on the tub inside of the overflow cover's area? Porcelain
on steel.

Are you going to use a a "rust converter" to stop the rust? I would use a rust converter, let it fully dry and use an appliance touch-up porcelain/enamel paint. You can use silicone over that for extra protection.

That's a good idea. The face is intact, only the edge is rusting, perhaps the behind. Had I thought about it I would have painted them first, maybe with my finger.
