Fixing a poorly installed Schluter "tileable" shower drain
Author: Janye (VA)

I have a shower with a Schluter "tileable" drain.

IOW the 4" square drain is covered with tiles and makes the shower floor look uniformly tiled at first glance.

But there is a problem:

The drain hole is misaligned with the drain pipe by slightly over an inch.

Under the tiles is a thin black ABS mat with a circular hole for the drain.

The 4" square drain cover rests on four indents in the ABS mat just outside the hole.

Because of the misalignment one edge of the ABS plastic mat is unsupported by mortar.

After several years the corners of the mat on that side have cracked and the drain cover is sinking on that side.

I'm looking for a solution to support a 3/16" or 1/8" thick stainless steel drain cover.

AI recommends adding Schluter All-Set mortar to the good side and the 3/4" mortar corners on the bad side.

Then bonding a 3/16" thick and 1" wide square ABS frame to the built up mortar with Kerdi Fix.

The new 3 7/8" square stainless drain cover would rest on the ABS frame.

Would this solution work?

Can you suggest a better one?

Thanks

You want to install a new conventional drain flange and grate, instead of repairing what you have? You could glue a piece(s) of PVC to the drain funnel, under the black mat, to support those corners and use what you have. If you want to install the new frame, you're still going to need support those corners.
