I can't remove old deteriorating overflow gasket from a bathtub in my mom's apartment.The overflow pipe is protruding out of the tub about an inch; and if I push it back it lands on about a quarter inch protrusion still and it feels pretty taught. The gasket of course sits pretty far inside the pipe because of the protrusion. I'm nervous about tapping the overflow pipe back/down to position the pipe for better access to the gasket; and then the gasket being so far into the hole it being even harder to access and pull off. There's very little room around the hole to access the old gasket as well. Please help!

what is the reason for removing the gasket? You would need access from either the backside or from underneath to loosen the overflow pipe. If the pipe is glued to the drain piping, you would need to cut the overflow pipe and then reattach. If you have a leak from the gasket, can you push the pipe in a little and force a bead of silicone through the gap between the tub and pipe?

i would do the same thing
