 Replace Toilet Supply Lines?
Author: Noko77 (AZ)

House is 22 years old. None of these hoses have been replaced. It looks like the hose cannot be replaced without also replacing the shutoff valve. Is it recommended I replace the hoses due to age? No trouble or leaks so far. Would I need a 1/2" compression sleeve puller, or does this valve just unscrew from the big nut that is closest to the wall? Thank you!

You do not need a compression sleeve puller. Unscrew the big chromed nut and the valve will come off.

Thank you for your help. Is there a compression sleeve inside the big nut? I am worried that if I open it up, and a compression sleeve is involved, it may not reseal after I replace the valve. Thanks again.

not to worry...

lather up the compression sleeve with some pipe dope and tighten it up.

Thank you. It figures that experienced professionals know what is going to work 99% of the time. When one looks something up, the advice is always going to be "make sure you buy $300 worth of tools before you begin, and never-ever skip replacing the compression ring." I have always believed in not fixing something if it ain't broke.

Thanks again.

you need two wrenches one to hold the valve body where it's flat, another to loosen the vug nut closest to zhe wall. Once it's loosened, the valve body comes off. The big nut and ferrule still on the pipe.

Sometimes the ferrule can be finessed out, other times it was over tightened and strangled the copper. You can use the new compression valve with the existing ferrule and nut and be done.

if you must replace the nut & ferrule which os usually because you want to replace the escutcheon plates, you will than need a steve puller. HDX sells one at the big box store for under $10, not the best quality tool but works in this situation.
