Do I Really Need It Replaced or Just Tested?

Hey everyone,

I recently got a notice from my local council saying my property needs backflow testing because I’ve got an irrigation setup connected to the main water supply. I wasn’t even aware I had a backflow prevention device until now.

A plumber came by for a quick look and mentioned it might need to be replaced, not just tested, since it’s “old.” But here’s the thing — the water pressure’s fine, and I’ve never noticed any issues with contamination or leaks.

I’m trying to understand:

How often should these devices actually be tested or replaced?

Is it a safety requirement or just a compliance formality?

Would appreciate advice from anyone who’s been through this.

Author: packy (MA) the bottom line is that you do whatever the local council demands. you test the devuce and replace it if it is defective. most devices sell a rebuild kit that will make it work like new much cheaper than replacing it.
