Insinerator disposer first sign of problem
Author: sum (FL)

I have an Insinkerator MODEL BADGER 100-1 disposer that I installed in 2015 and I noticed a potential issue.

A tenant has jammed the disposer with some debris and I went to free the blades and got it working again, but I had to insert that hex wrench to get it loosened and in the process I noticed a rusted screw on the underside of the unit. There are four screws along the perimeter on the underside of the housing. The ones in yellow are fine, there is one in red that is rusted.

A closer picture of the rusted screw.

I am thinking this is a sign that the disposer housing has rusted through and about to leak. Do you agree? I installed this ten years ago and I heard the average life span of a disposer is like 5 years?

Time to get a new disposer?

Agree, time for a new disposer. The Badger line is their economy line and you got your money's worth out of this one.

Chances are the motor shaft seal is beginning to leak. A spirit level to the underside of the disposer will probably explain why water is not getting to the non-rusting screw.

put the stopper in and fill the sink with water.
pull the stopper and look underneath for a leak.
