 Water heater natural gas piping
Author: schwansa67 (WI)

Hello all. I have to replace a natural 40 gallon atmospheric vent water heater. All of the current gas piping is black iron, with 1/2" going to water heater gas valve. Do I have to re connect with black iron? Or can I adapt to 1/2"ID soft copper for about 5 feet? There is no play in the current black pipe, and the new water heater has different inlet dimensions, and would be very difficult to match up with fittings. I'm basically asking if I can connect onto the 1/2" black pipe for about 5 feet with soft copper to bend/fit as needed using brass flare adapters to connect. (I cannot imagine it wouldn't work, as would be same inside diameter, and not breaking any grounding bond). Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Unless local code states otherwise, you can use a flexible appliance connector.
