 Vent pipe leak
Author: NTB (CA)

I live in Southern California and recently had a leak appear on a second floor ceiling. This is the first leak in 24 years living in the house. Thought it must be a roof leak coming from one of the vent riser penetrations since there is no plumbing except for condensate lines for the AC which we have not been using. We have yet to have a frost or any rain this year but had some drizzle around Christmas time around when the ceiling stain was noticed. Upon opening up the ceiling, discovered a horizontal crack on a 90 degree vent riser fitting. Shortly before the leak was noticed we had our kitchen remodeled with the kitchen not being used for about 3 weeks. If the crack has existed for an extended time, would the kitchen remodel cause something to change in the vent system causing water to back up in the vent pipe all the way to the second floor attic? Going to patch the pipe but want to make sure there is not a larger problem to deal with.

You can't have water backing up that high. What's happening is steam from hot water condenses as it rises in the cold pipe and turns to water. This water flows back down and is leaking out of the crack.
