We purchased a condo that had been vacant for 5 years, and immediately the new tenant started complaining about lukewarm water in the shower.
We turned the water temp on the water heater to 140, but still the same problem. Tried to restrict the cold water flow at the water heater, but then it wreaked havoc with other fixtures. (there are no separate shut off valves for the shower). It's also on the 3rd floor, so the water pressure is barely passable.
The plastic push/pull handle looked and worked exactly like an old Moentrol.
But when I removed the escutcheon, there was no balancing spool in there (I thought that might be the culprit), and I could not find a way to adjust the water temperature.
After much research, I discovered that this is the "Standard" Moen shower valve, which was made from the 1960s until around 2000. Push/pull plastic handle, but no balancing spool. I can replace the 1225 cartridge (just ordered one), but I still have NOT found a way to regulate the water temperature.
Please DON'T say I have to replace the whole valve. It's totally inaccessible from the back, and to replace it would mean ripping the tile shower apart.
Is there a way to regulate the temperature on this old fashioned "standard" Moen shower valve?

Cartridge in Moentrol and regular Moen valve is the same.
Pull handle out for volume adjustment and turn left or right for temperature adjustment - same as a Moentrol. Balancing spool only comes into play if the water pressure drops - same somebody flushes a toilet while the shower is being used.
If valve has a high limit stop that may need adjustment if it is limiting handle movement. I don't think regular Moen valves had a high limit stop, but you never know.
Pull off handle and turn cartridge with a wrench and see it you can hotter water...if so something is limiting handle movement.
140 degree water is dangerous.

There might be a single handle faucet in the suply piping before this shower, that is bleeding cold water into the hot water supply pipe to this shower.
