Help with Adjusting Dryer Vent for New Whirlpool Electric Dryer Installation
Author: marcelaverschoor (IL)

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to install a new Whirlpool 7.4 CU FT Front Load Electric Dryer. Currently, I have a Haier all-in-one washer-dryer that doesn’t require a vent (ventless dryer), so I need to modify or repair the venting system for the new dryer.

I’ve removed the closet where the Haier was installed, and I’m now evaluating the condition of the dryer vent. The current dryer vent appears to have been cut short, leaving no extra length to connect to the new dryer.

My specific questions are:

What adjustments are necessary to ensure the existing venting system works with the new dryer?
Can I extend and modify the existing one?
Does Home Depot ( vendor ) provide services to repair or extend dryer vents, or should I look into other service providers?
I’ve attached some photos to show the current state of the vent and the available space. Any advice on the steps to take or common pitfalls to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Although short, your current dryer vent looks in better condition than many. Vacuum or blow it out, ensure there are no blockages, measure the diameter, then purchase the shortest dryer vent hose that will connect your dryer to the vent without kinks. You don't want 10 feet of kinked hose bunched up behind the dryer.

If this sounds difficult, call a handyman. Not really a plumbing job. Home Depot contractors are often the lowest-cost bidders to maximize HD profits, be cautious.

What you currently have there is a broken off section of an adjustable elbow. I would guess that a duct coupler would fit into that. That original ducting needs to have a brush run through it and clean it out completely and then possibly some silicone on a duct connector would seal up with existing inside the wall fitting.
