heat pumps upstairs - but unheated basement downstairs
Author: stevesg (MA)

Hello -
This is the 2nd year I've used heat pumps (Fujitsu) to heat my house. They work great, and I live in New England. Last January I used my furnace - which is a wood/coal burning furnace in the basement - because the temperature outside dipped into the single digits. I didn't want the unheated basement temperature to drop where I would have pipe issues, even though the pipes are insulated. How cold would an unheated basement be to cause problems? The basement has no drafts. Thanks.

The basement temperature would have to drop below freezing for the pipes to freeze up as long as there are no drafts.

I have never seen freeaing temperatures in basements, even unheated ones. If the basement is above grade, then the temps might drop below freezing.
