Water From Water Heater is Too Hot

The water from my water heater is at140 degrees and I would like to adjust it to 120 degrees. I have the control on the water heater all the way down to the "Vacation" setting and the water is still at 140. Do I need to replace the thermostat?

depends on the brands and models, but many tanked water heaters I have seen have a temperature limit setting once you removed the front thermostat covering. I think most are set to 140 by default you can try lowering that to 120 or have you already tried it?

Yes, I have the control all the way down to the "Vacation" setting and it's still 140 degrees. I have not removed the thermostat cover. Is there an additional temperature control inside?

I'm guessing you have a gas water heater? Have you run enough water through the heater, for the stored water to cool off from the incoming water? If yes, the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Yes, I ran the water until the the water had cooled off. I came to the same conclusion that the thermsotat has gone south. I have a new one on order. Thanks!
