Push pop-up drain vs Pop-up drain with lift rod
Author: MES (PA)

I need to replace the faucet in my bathroom. I am not sure pop-up drain to purchase (Push pop-up drain vs Pop-up drain with lift rod). I know you have to put your hand in the water to drain the sink with the push pop-up drain, but I rarely use the pop-up drain. I read that the push pop-up drain is easier to install than the one with the lift rod. I, also, read one of the comments of a video that the push pop-up drain clogs easier. That doesn't make sense to me because there would be more blocking the flow of water in the pop-up drain with the lift rod. I am not the most handy, but I could replace the faucet with help from a video. Weighing the pros and cons of each, which would be the best type to purchase?

If your installing it get the push type

They do clog more often because they are a bulkier pop up but easily removed for unclogging/cleaning

Hi, bsipps. Thanks for the reply. The 2 model faucets I am considering are both push pop-ups. I will purchase one of those 2. Thanks again.

One advantage of the push drain is the push drain is completely independent of the faucet itself. You can buy brand A faucet and pair it with brand B drain.

With a popup drain assembly the faucet and drain are linked. Even though most of their designs are similar and for the most part can be made to work just fine I have come across some unique lift rods and special threaded ball seal cap that makes it necessary to hunt for parts.

Sum, I wasn't aware that I the push drain didn't come with the faucet and that I could purchase any push drain that I choose. Thanks for the added tip.

the vast majority of bathroom faucets come with a drain.
the vast majority of those come with a pop up drain.
this means there is a small hole in the center back of the faucet for the lift rod to go through.
i'm guessing that any faucet that comes with an umbrella type drain does not have that hole.
so if you want to change the drain there may be no way to do it because that hole is not there
i have seen faucets that have the small hole but they put a tiny plastic cap to cover the hole.

read what Packy said, most faucets come with a pop up drain. I have seen some higher end faucets where the drain is an "option" with additional cost or wall mount ones as well. But most of them will come with a drain and it's usually a pop up drain. Are you buying a new faucet and does it come with a popup drain already or are you thinking of not using the included popup drain and go with a push pop drain instead? The issue may be the lift rod hole some are very visible right in the middle and some are hidden on the back side of the faucet.

Sum, after looking at some faucets, I did notice that most come with the push pop-up drain than pop-up drain with lift rod. I am going to select the push pop-up.

Thanks for the additional info.
