Drill out a Delta cartridge to increase flow
Author: RR60 (VA)

Hi guys,
I was hoping to get an opinion.

I found a couple video's that said you can increase the flow to a Delta shower.
Shows how to drill out the cartridge.
3 months ago, I tried this with a new shower and Delta Dryden 17.
But I did not test the flow before. So cant say if it helped or not.

Recently I noticed the shower head drips sometimes. About 1 drip every 30 to 60 seconds. This is a few hours after a shower.

So I am guessing I should replace the cartridge or cup washers.

I need an opinion if drilling out the valve looks like a good idea. Or should I leave it alone.

If I look at all the post on you tube. It seems like 60% say it made a big difference. 40% said made difference at all. I don't understand how it can work sometime and not a for others.

Thanks

I can't tell you if it is going to make a difference but I can tell you why it does not work sometimes. If the piping to the valve is marginal (many elbows, non full-port valves, incoming line to the house etc), then the pressure drop is taking place in the piping and drilling out is not going to help.

The openings in the vave body are more important than those in the ball, which is why inverting THE valve body increases the flow.

the holes in the seats (what you call cup washers) is all the flow you are going to get.

Curious if I understand correctly.

If ever I install another one. This is just for a shower.
So could you take a tub & shower valve. Cap off the shower output.
Turn the valve upside down and use the tub output for the shower?

Thanks

Yes, I just replaced the whole cartridge 17 series.

Was the same flow as the one I drilled out.

Thanks
