I had to replace the trip lever in my bathtub.
The trip lever has a strainer for the drain.
I was able to remove the rod and plunger assembly by removing the trip lever face plate.
I adjusted the new assembly to the same length as the old and it is too long to insert into the overflow pipe.
when I shortened the assembly as much as possible I can get it into the overflow pipe but I cannot move the lever up or down.
I am not sure why the assembly cannot fit into the overflow.
The old assembly is not the same style. It was very old.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks

no. I'm a DIYer.
The trip lever broke and I need to replace.
There are 2 types of styles for the trip lever. The style of the original trip lever had 3 rods that were linked together with a couplet on the center one to adjust the height. The new trip lever has 2 rods linked together and the height is adjusted at the top.
Not sure if the change in trip lever style would be the reason it seems too long for the overflow pipe even with the adjustment at its shortest length

Did you change the overflow and drain assembly piping as well
Try a little silicone grease on the barrel

first thing to do is to make sure the plunger at the bottom of the linkage is the proper shape and size. make sure when it is seated that it will seal !! they are not all the same.
can you transfer the linkage from the new overflow plate to the old plate? maybe the part that sticks into the overflow is somehow different?
if needed, can you do the same with the plunger?
of course the old one may be so worn that you can't salvage any of it but i'm just guessing.
P/S.. a slight bend or kink in the brass linkage will do no harm. think of the plunger like a bullet guided by the gun barrel. the fact that the linkage is bent a little doesn't stop the plunger from doing its job

Thanks for the help.
We did just that.
First changed the linkage assembly but it still did not work.
We then swapped out the plunger and that did it.
We measured the 2 plungers across and the diameters measured the same. But apparently the older one was slightly narrower and the pipe was not forgiving.
Once we got the old plunger on we were able to finish the installation and everything works great.
Thanks again for all of the help!.
