 Kitchen sink basket strainer leaking
Author: ikeeki320 (MN)

We recently got new countertops and double bowl sink. After that was done I redid the piping to connect the sink and garbage disposal. Everything seems to be ok except it leaks on the underside of the basket nut that connects the pipe with the top hat washer. I circled the area in the attached picture. I used all new piping and it leaked worse with the new top hat so I've got the old one installed right now. I tightened the basket nut before tightening the other nuts of the piping and just can't figure out why it's still leaking. Is it common to be able to see the top hat washer when looking down into the sink?

the flat part of the washer is facing up ?

they do make flat washers for that connection. they work better.

sometimes you just smear a touch of pipe dope on the joint and it helps seal.

Yes, the flat side is up. I'll try one of those types of washers or pipe dope. Thanks!

no, you should NOT see that much washer

try a new top hat or a 'thick' flat washer
