EVERY, repeat EVERY, NPT fitting 1/8" through 2" has EXACTLY 7 threads

if these threads are within tolerance(s) the PROPER makeup including 'power' is 7 resulting in a leak free LUBRICATED metal to metal seal (the dope is NOT a sealant, merely a lubricant)

if the threads are 'tight' then a good joint can be made with 4-6 turns and 'dope'

if, however, too many turns are used then the fitting is wedged open by the imperfect 'ending threads' resulting in a 'pipe joint' seal and NOT a metal to metal seal

But the reason they quit for not getting mustard on the hot dog is because they feel strongly that mustard works better than the yellow dope for gas threaded joints.

yellow is used for TPFE 'tape' to indicate a 'thicker' more uniform composition


imo: permatex (now known as permatex pipe joint compound) works for EVERYTHING, but, is very very VERY messy to work with




a THICK black sticky goo which does NOT totally harden except when used on steam piping, and then only after several years
