how can i split the flow of water in a sewer system
Author: alley cat (OH)

My neighborhood is subject to constant flooding because of inflow and infiltration from the storm sewer system into the sanitary sewer system. The sewer system currently has a single right angle which routes water around the corner. We are asking the city to split the flow of water and direct some around the corner but also allow some to continue forward in a straight line and tie into the sewers that services the rest of the street. Are thinking is that this would relieve the pressure and back flow which occurs at the corner.

If this is possible is there a name for this type of split connection? I act as our neighborhood representative and would like to use the correct terminology when interfacing with the city representatives. Thanks for your help.

NO, NOT POSSIBLE

Only a LARGER (greater capacity) pipe would help.

OR

Your neighbor can install a backflow prevention valve at his/her floor drain.

you might try a good cleaning of the pipe and a camera inspection.

the city should do that and it may work fine after.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately the we have had the city clean and inspect the pipes but this has not helped.. We have sewage backups regularly into our basements. There are two parallel streets with two sewer lines.
at the intersection our street our sewer system has a 90 degree angle and moves storm water to the right. At the the same intersection the other street's sewer system moves water to the left connecting to a main street. The two sewer do not connect. Our streets flood and theirs does not. They city will not connect us directly because they are afraid of flooding the other homes. We are asking the city to split the flow of water and allow a portion to flow into the other sewer system directly to the main street to relieve the backflow that occur everytime there is a major storm. Is it even possible to split the water flow?

your local board of health or your state department of public health needs to get involved.

as to your question..

anything that was done can be undone.
