Should new tankless gas heater go exactly where old tank was?
Author: bam99 (SC)

A plumber once told me I could move my water heater from attic to garage "fairly easily" smile.
(It seemed like a make-work suggestion to me.)
But if I switch to gas/tankless, is there any added advantage of getting it out of the attic?
In other words, is the ideal location of a tankless heater any different than a tank-ful heater?
Tanks a lot.

The clothes washer and in our home has never experienced warm water, as the time it takes for hot water to reach it is more than the fill time. We are considering a remodel that would include switching from one whole-house tankless to two, which would reduce the maximum run distance substantially.

have alot of factors here.

you can't just say " it is always better to have the heater in the garage".

there are alot of expenses here.

dealing with the old gas pipe, the old water piping, the old flue etc.

the new heater needs new gas piping, water lines rerouted and incoming and outgoing combustion air.

there are so many huge government rebates out there that i would sit down with a reputable plumber and have a talk.

if you have hot water heat, you can look into a "combi" heater that does both.

so take your time. talk to a plumber, check for rebates and come back here with any questions.
