Is the Saddle valve for water lines for refrigerator ice maker lines within code standards in New York (Long Island)?

If not , when did this take effect?

Code approved or not, it is the last way I would ever make a connection.

Horrible valves. Whenever I come across a saddle valve while working on a fridge or furnace humidifier and need the water turned off, I turn off water to the whole house and not touch the saddle valve.

You touch a saddle valve, you own it. If the saddle valve malfunctions when you operate it (and they almost always will), the customer expects you to fix it for free bacause the saddle valve was fine all these years, before you touched it.

Saddle valves are popular because they are easy to install, but a nightmare long term. They always install easily and most don't leak for many years, but if you ever need to turn that handle for any reason they will leak and never seal again. Eventually someone will pay to have that valve cut out and replaced with a tee and proper shutoff. Pay me now or pay me later.

If you do choose to install one, be sure to locate it in a place where the pipes are serviceable as described, if not $$$$ at replacement time.
