 Apartment back up
Author: adrnlopez1985 (CA)

Hello, I was recently served a letter from my apartment manager notifying me of a plumbing issue in the unit under me. I live in a 2-story complex and I am on the second floor. Late last night I heard the neighbor snaking his tub and it sounded like it was right under my tub. A plumber ended up coming to fix the problem. This isn't the first episode, as the most recent was about a week ago. This apartment complex which was probably built in the 50s or 60's in the city of Los Angeles has had many plumbing issues since I've lived here for the past 10 years. They have cut the floor open in walkways and common areas to fix or replace piping. What I would like to find out is could my apartment have anything to do with the backup issue in my downstair neighbor's apartment. I have never had any issues with the plumbing in my apartment. The reason I ask is because my management is blaming me for the issue, saying that the piping is connected to my unit and says I'm flushing too much TP down the toilet.

Tell management to 'pound sand'.

Ask them if they would prefer the flushing of leaves.

ANY problem caused by your flushing the toilets would NOT be cured by snaking the downstairs bathtub.

The OP stated that the neighbour tried snaking the tub and then the plumber came. The plumber probably accessed the main drain and not through the tub drain.

Does the OP use excessive TP? If so, can he cut down on it? If the main drain is in rough shape and cannot be easily replaced, I don't think it is very unreasonable to ask to cut down on TP use. Of course if the OP does not want to comply, that is his prerogative.

It sounded like the tub was being snaked. I haven't asked him directly but guessed that because it sounded like metal on metal. The bathtub in my apartment appears to have a metal drainage pipe from what I've noticed. I reread the letter from my management today and noticed it said. "wipes down the drain". I have a two year old but we do not flush our wipes down the drain.

It’s is difficult to diagnose who exactly is flushing wipes when the clog is in the main drain considering the main drain serves the entire building/wing
