I have a new septic system with 2 concrete covers and 2 concrete risers recently fitted over the covers. One of the handles broke at some point probably when being dug out when searching for them under the soil. It's not an urgent situation since the tank won't need pump out for a while, but when the time comes will I have to remove the riser to remove the cover? Is there a way to add a handle now so it can be lifted out without disturbing the riser?

you don't need to remove the riser to access the tank. the cover just lifts off.
a picture would be helpful for anyone wanting to make a suggestion for a new handle.

thanks for the advice. having trouble getting a picture to post, but slid cover almost off and there is a 2" diameter "ring" for a lack of a better description, equally around cover. seems it would be hard to fit a crowbar but could be another tool is regularly used for this. is there a hydraulic suction tool that could or is used?

I couldn't figure out how to get the picture to here but found 2 solutions from you tube. Since I have the cover off, it is easy to pre drill the cement cover for 2 tapcon screws and I bought a heavy duty steel anchor ring. Another solution just for another option, is a "grabo" suction tool. It uses a lithium battery and is used for various construction jobs too. It cost anywhere from $150.-$200. Maybe septic service workers use them? Anyway, just wanted to share this info.
