Need help to remove this American Standard shower cartridge
Author: howdy2 (WA)

Hello:

I can’t seem to figure out how to remove this American Standard shower cartridge. I have old galvanized pipes and I think there is sediment in the cartridge that is making it so there is very little hot water.

I don’t see any retainer clip. There were two small screws on the face that I removed. I have pulled on the cartridge but it won’t seem to come out.

There is a tab looking spot at 3:00 and 9:00 on the sides. I used a flat head screwdriver for leverage to try to pry it out but no luck.

Thank you for your ideas…

The 2 screws are what holds the cartridge in place.

You can try putting the handle back on and rock it back & forth while pulling....

More pressure under the tabs....

Whichever you do, I would have a replacement cartridge on hand just in case it does not survive the removal process.

when you have the cartridge out, briefly turn the water on to flush out any debris.
also put some tub and tile caulk around the tub spout.

FYI: I was able to remove the cartridge.

To help others, it ended up that the exterior ring with all the holes in it spins off like a nut.

seems funny that the part would be held by two long screws AND also need to be unscrewed.

You are correct.

I was mistaken. The two small screws that I mentioned were related to the trim piece and not holding the cartridge in place.
