I had to replace a 2" PVC p trap with the thin plug on the bottom because it split on the female threads. The gasket was missing but it was sealed with Teflon tape and pipe dope. Would the missing gasket cause it to be over tightened and split?

Thanks for the reply. I replaced it with a Canplas p trap with capped co on the bottom that is large enough to remove and less likely to split too.

Also, if the pipe dope wasn't suitable for plastic, it could cause the plastic to become brittle and more prone to cracking.

I doubt overtightening caused the split since the threads on the plug would not be tapered. Overtightening would much more likely result in stripped threads.
As Steve mentioned, incompatible dope might have weakened the PVC.

The dope was rated for PVC. What about some one hitting their head on it?
