I purchased 2 1 1/2" Canplas PVC double sanitary tees and 2 2" Canplas double sanitary tees at at a hardware store that was closing and they have a flat thin piece of PVC on the top where the horizontal connects to the center of the fitting. What is this plastic for?

It has nothing to do with the internal passage. It just connects between the side branches and the top hub..
