Use a PVC pipe or a 55-gallon drum for septic Risers?
Author: Mark3864 (AZ)

Hello, people.
Newbie here. First time dealing with a septic.
Just bought a property with an old (30 years?) septic system;
it passed Certification, and the Tank is 3' below ground level.
I want to add Risers to the two access ports which are now accessible.
Lowes / HomeDepot items cost several hundred $.
1. Can I simply use a length of 20 to 24 inch diameter PVC pipe,
or maybe just a plastic 55-gallon drum?
2. How to Seal the connection of the Pipe / Drum to the top of the Tank?
OR - Why is that sealing even necessary?
Thanks.

Either method should work
You want to seal it with hydraulic cement to prevent ground water or dirt from getting into the tank
Also consider the type of lid you will use like weight and how to secure it so no person or animal falls in

Search for "Septic Tank Riser Kits".....might make it easier.

yeah, hydraulic cement will work.
i would fill around the extension with a few inches of fine sand and then put dirt ontop of that.

Thanks for the replies, people.
OK, I s'pose I SHOULD seal that connection. BSipps, thanks for that reasoning.
A search mentions Concrete patch mix or Henry's roofing tar, and now there's Hydraulic cement.
I'm thinking the Henry's might be easiest.

Thanks for your expertise, guys.
