Trying to replace super old tub spout, what is this?
Author: smiley2023 (LA)

The metal part of the tub spout was corroded and basically in pieces, it came off but this is still attached to the connection/pipe? We have zero experience with this type of thing, but thought it would be simple enough to replace the spout but maybe not. Is this plastic piece something that needs to come off as well? It does not turn as if it is screwed onto the pipe, and there is no screw at the bottom. The diverter pin in the metal spout was screwed into this piece... is this piece just the interior plastic parts of the spout that was removed? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

You posted three pics, all zoomed in. It will help to zoom out and take another pic.

I run into this all the time with my customers. They always zoom in as much as possible. Sometimes you want to see surrounding components and the relationship of this part to its surroundings, to get a better perspective.

I have never seen a part like that on a tub spout or anywhere else for that matter.

Is this in a mobile home by chance ?

No, not a mobile home. it’s in a house that was built in I think 1978. We haven’t removed the spout on the other bathtub yet to see if it’s the same. The metal spouts are both corroded but was able to make out “B125” on this one and there is “SP” and also “ZP” on the other spout. The knobs on the tubs are both delta. Not sure if that is helpful.

Also, the pull up diverted pin was screwed into the top this plastic piece in the photos above. Not sure if that’s helpful or matters either.

Post a picture of the complete tub spout in other restroom and maybe that will give us a clue.

Is there access behind the tub spout
I would assume the plastic piece may unscrew
If you have access maybe you can see the connection in the wall

"Tub spout with brass drop nipple and elbow."

the spout 'should not' have separated from the (plastic) part 'left behind'

simply unscrew the plastic 'thingy'
