odd black petroleum based 4" pipe--how to connect to it
Author: ericsarratt (NC)

I was doing some work under an old farmhouse today.

I need to connect to an old pipe that goes to the septic tank.

The pipe is 4" in diameter (roughly), but it is not cast iron.

When I cut it I started smelling petroleum.

Is this orangeburg? I thought orangeburg pipe was orange. The pipe is in good shape.

I need to connect a 3" PVC line to it.

I could not find a Fernco fitting for the connection in the local big box plumbing retailer.

Thank you for the help.

Orangeburg. Company started in Orangeburg NY.

Contact Fernco with the dimensions you need. Bigbox will only have common sizes.

Fernco should work. I don't know about a tee or combo but you can put a pvc one in if you cut out enough of the black pipe. Fernco - pvc pipe - pvc fitting - pvc pipe - Fernco
your 3" pipe
