 Cracked toilet tank
Author: Rick1669 (PA)

I have a crack in my toilet tank and it's just a drip now. I've patched it with JB Weld om the outside and poured some liquid Flex Seal over the crack on the inside. I really don't want to replace the toilet since all I can find around are those stupid "flush 3 times" ones around here. It is a 40 y.o. Crane Manhattan series with the 3" Flush Valve. What are my chances of this patch work holding until I can get a 31242 tank to replace it?

It is impossible for anyone to say it will last for a certain amount of time
Just keep an eye on it

Depending on why it cracked, where it's cracked, and the condition/size/etc of the crack generally I recommend turning off the water and only turning it back on while you're there (meaning refilling the tank and then again shutting off the water) because IF the crack opens up while you aren't there you'll have major flooding. Porcelain isn't like metal and cracks tend to be unpredictable.

"Better safe than sorry" in my opimion and so if you can't find a tank replacement right now/today I recommend turning off the water to your toilet and buying and installing a new toilet.

YES, shutting the water between toilet uses is a very very very good preventive measure.
