How to unscrew stuck ring/collar from Delta shower faucet
Author: BobMCT (CT)

I need to replace the springs and washers inside the cartridge on a 40 yo Delta single know scald guard shower faucet. Once the knob is removed its usually simple to unscrew the ring/collar to allow access. In this case I cannot seem to unscrew the ring. I've used pentration lube and a pair of 16" channel lock pliers and either I can't get a grip or if I do I cannot break loose the ring. Hopefully someone has run into this before and may have some suggestions. Any/all suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I used a low heat torch flame on the ring and maintained pressure, with channelocks, on it until it became free to unscrew.

I slice the retaining nut with a Dremel and pop it off. Then install new retaining nut.

On some old Delta shower valves you have to be careful because the brass section that cartridge goes into is attached to the rest of the valve body with 3 copper tubes. Twist too hard on retaining nut, copper tubes crack etc. and you have to replace entire valve.

Good luck.
