Ugly joint repair on 1-1/4 tube drain at floor, need advice
Author: CharlieNH (NH)

In the process of replacing my S-trap in a very old summer camp, the 1-1/4 brass and chrome tubing that the drain consists of came loose where it goes down into a joint flush with the wood floor. (Vibrations from sawing it partway up shook it loose.)Looks like a lead joint and lead is now cracked. Pipe (tubing) wobbles but won't turn or come out. No access under house and don't want to use any heat. How can I seal and stabilize? Thought about a sealing caulk that adheres to lead and chrome. Two best I read about are CT1 and Adiseal, which I can't find in US. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

The proper way would be to open up the floor cut the pipe 3” from the wye or tee connection and melt lead off the brass ferrule and replace with pvc

As for any sealants there is no guarantee then again there is no guarantee the pipe isn’t broken further down the line

Hercules sells a product called plastic seal it says use instead of lead, not sure if it’s the correct application for you situation though

i believe what you have is a 1 1/4 tubular trap with the end stuck into a piece of 1 1/4 copper tubing and soldered.
my friend from PA may be correct but the method i describe was used much more often.
in either case, there are lots of sticky patching materials that will give a number of years use.

You see a "crack" in the lead?

more likely he sees a crack in the solder joint.

that inserted type joint had no socket to hold the solder from flowing down.

Thanks for your thoughts. No way to get under floor without too much destruction. That seal material mentioned may be useful if my other one doesn't work. I did just find a source in Maryland for the Adiseal adhesive caulk, which I will incorporate into the repair. The tube is inserted into some kind of small fitting with a thick wall. Wondering if this is like a mini caulked soil pipe fitting and how far the tube goes in. My plan is to dig off all lead that has separated from pipes and then apply the caulk. Wish I knew more about the original joint and how far the tubing extends into it. Original solder came loose when I was cutting the tubing to redo the trap in a P style also with a vent.
