I am installing a new pump for my pond, and the pump has a inlet, that is male and female threaded. You can use a 1-1/2" male adapter to the inside threads or a 2" female adapter on the outside threads.

Now the pump comes with a 2" union, and it has a gasket that I thought is quite interesting. Most of these unions I have worked with in the past use a black o-ring to seal. But this union has a gasket that is like a rubber washer, but with a bump all the way around like this.

I have never seen these kinds of gaskets before, is there a name for it? Is it better then a traditional o-ring?

Author: steve (CA) Most listings I'm seeing refer to it as an "o-ring gasket" and claim it's superior standard o-ring.
