What does it mean when you use the water meter key to shut off the water meter valve and it continuously turns to the right and never stops turning? It also continuously turns to the left?
Full Story: my neighbors sidewalk had a bursted pipe underneath it so I used my key to shut off his water meter valve to see if it would stop the water. The shut off valve continuously turned to the right. I did not use much pressure to turn it. I checked his hose and no water came out so there is no water to the house. I used the key to make sure the valve was open however the valve continuously turned to the left. Still no water to the house.
Could it be the city side busted pipe being the reason for no water to the house?
First you should always confirm with the water company if it’s OK to shut the water off yourself at the curb stop
Sometimes you could face a very hefty fine if you are not allowed to shut it off as a contractor or homeowner
Even though it spins 360 the stop could be broken off of it, but turned at a 90° turn opposing the house should be off that means horizontal with the piping
The valve is now broken in the off position they will ask who turned it off, blame that person for breaking the valve even though it could have been compromised prior to you turning it off and possibly charge you or your neighbor for the repair
In northern Delaware no one but a water company can shut off the water at the curb stop if your caught it’s a $10,000 fine
