I had a copper pipe frozen last winter under a tight crawl
space on the cold water side. I shut water to it off and now
am in the process of beginning the repair. I found the split
in the horizontal pipe run inside the floor joist near the top
and side. I cut off the 2" long copper containing the split.
I ordered a 12" repair sleeve made by Sioux chief.

My plan is to cut the repair sleeve 4" long and sweat the sleeve
bridging the two pipes 1 in on either side. I now have 2 options.

1) leave the 2" gap between the two 1/2" pipes. or

2) Cut a new 1/2" copper 2" long and insert it inside the gap
and flux the entire repair and sweat the entire 4".

The thought is that the full length soldered repair
is better to withstand future freezing.
What is your opinion?

if you can fit it in use the ENTIRE coupling as the pipe will have expanded before splitting

soldering the ends only is just fine

I will pre fit the repair tube before I cut it.
I was surprised how little deformation of the existing
copper was. It looks like the deformation of the blow out was
limited to 3/4 inch, and I removed that with a close quarters
tubing cutter. It worked flawlessly and cut in 3 revolutions with
a perfect edge. It's my favorite pipe cutter.
