Best 2" pvc trap for shower drain?
Author: exapprentice30 (MA)

What is the best 2"pvc p trap to use on shower drain in the basement? A union joint p trap can leak if the nut comes loose and would require a no hub coupling on the inlet to remove it for cleaning and the clean out less one would not be code if it was exposed. The old 2"pvc trap has a thin clean out plug on the bottom that is rough on the outside cracked on the outside but is not leaking yet.

The little rubber gasket is long gone so it has been sealed with tape and pipe dope. Im not sure if the gasket kept it from over tightening it and cracking it or having people whack their head on it for 22 years has caused it to crack too.

union joint so there is no nut to bang your head on the bottom.
cleaning a 2 inch shower trap is so easy from the top. just remove the grill and use a 1/4 inch drop head and it goes right thru. you can also trickle water at the same time.

1. standard PVC P-trap with a threaded cleanout plug on the bottom is a common choice.
2. A deep seal P-trap provides a larger water seal, reducing the chances of sewer gases coming back into the shower.
3. While you mentioned concerns about the nut coming loose, some union joint P-traps have a locking mechanism to prevent accidental loosening.

When choosing a PVC P-trap, consider factors such as ease of installation, maintenance, and compliance with local plumbing codes.
