Unusual Pex to washing machine hook-up
Author: tab a (KS)

I've done a fair amount of Pex work, and have used Oatey boxes in the past, but wonder if there's a better way for this situation: The Pex pipe is not IN the wall but is coming into the wall from a horizontal position (pipe aimed at the back of the machine) rather than from above or below, in the wall.

The wall is plaster and lath, and on a utility porch, so install doesn't really need to be pretty. Would prefer not to put a 'box' IN the wall if I don't have to.

Any ideas about the best way to secure the Pex 1/4 turn fittings to the wall? Thought about a piece of 1/2" iron pipe through the wall, with Pex fittings on each end which would keep it from moving in and out, but maybe there's an easier way?

Thanks!

Bronze Dual Washing Machine Valve: [www.plumbingsupply.com]

+

2 PEX adapters: [www.bing.com] - [th.bing.com]

+

2 'minerallac' hangers: [www.bing.com]

said hangers will secure the 1/2 threaded 'legs' of the valve vertically in front of the wall - the valve can be mounted 'upside/down' as needed - ie. above the machine

post a picture if you can.

you said the PEX is not "IN THE WALL" but is "COMING INTO THE WALL" from a horizontal position. Are you saying the PEX is being run behind the wall and now needs to turn into the wall, into the wall cavity, past the wall cavity? Or are you saying the wall cavity is concealed and the PEX is running along the surface and you need to surface mount them? There is no need to use a washing machine box unless you have a wall cavity to recess it into, even then it's just done for "neatness".

If you just want to steady the valves you can use PEX drop ear elbows. Those come with "ears" with mounting holes (some with 2 holes some 3 holes). If you can determine where the studs are behind the wall, you can securely attach those elbows to the studs (I wouldn't secure them to just plaster and lath), then use male threaded valves for your hoses to the machine.

Sorry if it's not clear--I'll get a pic tomorrow.

The Pex is coming into the wall perpendicularly. Seen from above:

Already have 1/4 turn shut off valves with 1/2" FPT, so would prefer to use them, if feasible.

Thanks.

to use your existing FPT valves you will also need 2 close nipples

Here's a pic of the other side of the wall from the washer. Cold line is temporarily hooked up with the Pex while I figure out how to finish this. Old iron pipe line for hot still in wall.

Also a pic of the valve I have.

Thanks.

You could use two sill cocks with brass or S/S nipples through the wall then adapt to the PEX with two pex x pipe elbow adapters.

Can't tell for sure but is this outdoors?

PEX is not supposed to be exposed to UV.

he sais it was plaster and lath wall..

no idea but the picture lighting looks outdoor sunlight to me but pictures could be deceiving.

OP said "utility porch" does it mean it's an exterior area but with a roof overhang?

It's all inside. That's in a stairwell to a tiny basement.
