 ABS sewage pipe
Author: Kris52 (OR)

So I am very curious and would like a few different opinions before coming to a decision. Is it possible for an ABS sewage pipe to come unglued from a union? And is it normal practice to use plastic zipties to hold up the sewage piping up from the ground without anything else to support it ? They are trying to foot me the bill for something that wasnt initially the cause nor the first 2 opinions of professionals. Now the owner said that we are responsible for the pipe coming unglued? I thought ABS glue was another form of plastic welding?

Yes it is 'possible' but it should NOT 'separate' w/o actually breaking.

NO

Solvent Welding is the proper term. You are correct. In theory the joint is as strong as the pipe itself IF, repeat IF, made correctly.

I have seen PVC/ABS pipe joints come apart, mainly pipes coming cleanly out out of their fitting sockets. From what I can tell this was due to lack of priming in very early uses of plastic piping, and why they went to purple primer so the inspector could verify that the joint was primed before being glued.

The 2 cases I have seen in my homes were PVC pipe, and I just slathered on some new glue and stuck it back together. Hopefully it holds for another 40 years.....
