Hot Water Circ Pump Problem (Hot Water out of Cold Tap)
Author: Styopa (NY)

Seen a number of posts on this but focusing on solution.

Only place I have hot water mixing issue is with single handle faucet tap (MOEN) in kitchen. All other faucets are double handle and seemingly OK.

How can I manage this problem on the single handle faucet?

if all faucets are ok but the kitchen faucet has a problem, why do you think it is a recirculating issue?

Tried & tested . .This only happens when pump is on.

I have turned pump off for extended periods and this issue only happens when pump is on/working and only happens in this one place. This seems to be a common issue but wondering if there is a simple solution.

Bad check valve on the cold water pipe.

or

Improper recirc line install.

or

Bad cartridge on the single handle kitch faucet.

Helpful - thanks.
A few followups:

# Check Valve - where would this be located

# Improper recirc - I am guessing unlikely as this issue only happens in the one place and that one place is single handle (sound right?)

# The faucet is brand new - so discontinuing this .. for the moment at least

There are TWO checks.

One is usually built into the pump - it seldom fails.

The PRIMARY check should be in the cold water pipe feeding into the water heater.

If the kitch is the first fixture group fed by the HW from the tank it is probably the 'last' fixture on the cold therefor the closest to the 'failed' check which allows the circ pump to push HW into the CW at that point.

ps.

TY - Will check it out but "feel" its not the issue . .which leads me to

Question: I was told that this is not an unusual on single handed faucets and is it possible that it simply a flaw in the design of these single handles? Maybe there is a fix in the leads/faucet itself?

Did the problem start when the faucet was installed? Is it a touch activated faucet? What is the model number? A picture of the recirculation pump might help.

No, it is not 'a flaw in the faucet itself'.

Disconnect the CW under the counter and see if you get hot from the cold THERE with the circ pump running.

If you do, most likely it due to a failed (or 'missing') check valve.

Replace the faucet's core.

hj,

Do you mean that the faucet itself is passing or may pass hot water into the cold piping even when off?

Like a faulty shower valve?

I live and I learn.

OP: Replace the POS with a two handle model and be done with it.

I run into "bad" Moen cartridges that are "crossing over" all the time. One way to find them is to turn off the water heater supply then open a sink's hot water faucet. If water still flows you have crosssover. Then go to each Moen, Mixet, Grohe, etc., and turn it to the full hot side. Unless there is more than one bad one, when you turn the bad one, the water flow will stop. You can also sometimes hear the water crossing over inside the valve if it is bad enough. One thing to remember, is that the bad cartridge may not be, and often is not, in the apartment having the problem.

There are a few potential solutions you can try to manage the problem:
1. Check the temperature limit stop: Many single-handle faucets, including MOEN models, have a temperature limit stop feature that allows you to set a maximum temperature for the hot water. If the limit stop is set too low, it can cause insufficient hot water or a mix of hot and cold water. Locate the temperature limit stop, usually located under the faucet handle, and adjust it to allow for a higher temperature if needed.
2. Flush the faucet: Mineral deposits or debris may accumulate over time, affecting the performance of the faucet cartridge or valve. Turn off the water supply to the faucet and then remove the faucet handle. Clean any debris or mineral buildup from the cartridge or valve.
3. Replace the cartridge: If cleaning the cartridge or valve does not resolve the issue, the cartridge itself may be faulty or worn out. Consider replacing the cartridge with a new one. MOEN provides specific cartridge models for their faucets.
4. Adjust the water heater temperature: Ensure that the temperature setting on your water heater is appropriately adjusted.
