 Crawlspace digging tool suggestions
Author: ericsarratt (NC)

Do you have any good tool suggestions for digging dirt in a cramped environment? Not to bad. The crawlspace is 3.5-4' tall, but I can't use my usual shovel.

Anything that has worked well for you over the years?

The job:
I am digging up 4" cast iron sewer line and replacing it with 4" PVC. The cast is buried in the ground for about 10'.

Cut the shovel or buy a shorter one
The claw end of you hammer also works or a chipping gun

The entrenching tool is a great idea because it can be used in pick formation also and has a short handle. Also, a good mattocks would help break up the ground.

If you are digging ten feet deep in a crawlspace that's 4' tall where is the dirt going to pile up at?

I believe the 10' refers to a linear length of pipe being buried, not the depth of the burial.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested a demolition hammer:

It doesn't look like our sponsor Plumbing Supply carries one. I bought a similar one at Harbor Freight for one job about 15 years ago. It succeeded and survived, so it gets pulled out once every 2-3 years to chip concrete or dig holes in hard dirt.
