 Removing paint from pvc pipe
Author: Huck (CA)

I need to replace a sprinkler valve that has painted inlet and outlet pipes (it's right next to the house, and the painters just blasted everything with paint when they painted the house). I assume I won't be able to use pvc primer and glue to attach new fittings unless the paint is removed. What can be used to remove the paint without affecting the pvc?

I put primer on the paint and then scraped it off with the blade of a utility knife

Agreed a little clear prime on it and wipe with a clean rag

Or the old scrape and and sand cloth if that doesn’t work

If you put primer on it, sandcloth will just smear it.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. What I wound up doing was wetting some 400 grit sandpaper with rubbing alcohol, and that took the paint off very well.
