Replacing Cast Iron Flang with PVC Schedule 40 DWV Pipe and new Flange
Author: Lee (NJ)

I bought a bit to drill through the tile. I haven't used it yet. About to remove cast iron pipe from basement going up to bathroom.

I am a little concerned never did this type of thing before. One bathroom in the house. Although I have plenty of plumbing (DIY) in the past. Any tips would be appreciated. Looks like they filled in with mortar or whatever they did back in the 1950's at the top of the floor or around flange. Hopefully be able to secure flange on top of tile. Thinking it might end up on the edge of tile - then drilling tile and tile will chip. I guess I could make hole larger then place wood in around new PVC Schedule 40 pipe somehow. Hopefully I will not have to do any carpentry. Lol.

i don't know what you are all stressed out about?
it doesn't matter what you have now. what matters is how you do the repiping.
you have some sort of lead pipe that is peened over something which i can't make out.
but as i said it doesn.t matter.
rip it out and replace it with plastic pipe.
you should have no trouble.

The flange screws would screw into the wood subfloor. If the subfloor is questionable, add a piece of plywood under the existing subfloor.
